On May 25, 2012 Sheffield won their first state title in Track and Field. It was Larry Kimber's second-place finish in the 200 that advanced Sheffield into first place. Adding on to that, their 1,600 relay team consisting of Keith Jones, Jaquan Clayton, Dominique Williams and Larry Kimber also caused this historical event of leading the Knights as State Champs.
Who would have ever thought that Sheffield could come this far. From all the negativity that the news exposed of Sheffield High, we still mange to rise through that and became the talk of the town from our first great win of the state. I was so proud to be there and watch our magnificent Knights run to become the state champs. They made history and astonished many, making their fans, coaches and parents stand in awe for their win. Maybe now Sheffield will be consider as something better than they thought of us to be.

Historical Event: Women's Suffrage
Now in time, you have to be at the age of eighteen or older and a citizen of the U.S in order to vote, no matter what your race, religion or sex may be. The qualifications of voting are more concise now than it was 80 years ago, where women were not allowed the right to vote.
Initially, having suffrage conveys that you are a part of the U.S. and that your opinion and thoughts can make a difference. When you don' have these rights you feel like you are just going by other's decision and choices. This is how the women felt in the 19th century when only white and black males could vote. The first woman who ever mention and brought to attention of the right to vote was Ms. Susan B. Anthony, the leader of the American woman suffrage movement. She fought hard to command for women's franchise but unfortunately she died before that time came.
Eventually a changed occurred, when Alice Paul and Lucy Burns pushed to finish what Anthony started. They formed the NWP (National Women's Party) in 1913, 7 years after Ms. Anthony died, putting its main priority for the passing of the constitutional amendment ensuring women's suffrage. With the diligence of both and the other women that fought too, the 19th amendment was formed and finally added into the constitution on June 4, 1919.
Likewise, During those times it was believed that "Women have been trained to speak softly and carry a lipstick." but, "Those days are over." - Bella Abzug, a leader of the Women's Movement. This quote is of women empowerment and justifies the change that has been made. Throughout the women’s suffrage movement women were considered weak and incompetent to make political decisions. The men made it seem as if women were inferior to them which were not true because women are just as equal to men.
In short, women’s values were depreciated by men and they were looked down upon. Women went through many obstacles to achieve the passing of the 19th amendment. We are grateful for letting them create this remarkable change. Now our voices can be heard and freedoms can be exercised.

Sheffield School Spirit
As I walk the halls of Sheffield, I have found myself becoming more and more fond of my school, but also less and less fond of the students who attend. The students at Sheffield High School, to me, are not school spirited at all. Initially, what is school spirit, you may ask. Well it is the feeling of being proud and enthusiastic about the school you go to. Or it could even be the emotional support that you show to your school. I have noticed that many of our fellow students don’t really care about what goes on in their school or even try to join anything to represent Sheffield. Most of these teens, now a days, just go to school and come straight home to do what?…..absolutely nothing. This shouldn’t be acceptable. Every student must contribute their time to anything positive concerning school. Whether it’s participating in sports, the band, cheer leading, dance team or even different clubs and associations such as a spirit squad, it's all something that shows that you are a part of your school.
Natalie Portman, a movie actress, admits that she absolutely loved school coming up as a teen, "I loved school so much that most of my classmates considered me a dork.” Maybe this may be the case to many of our students at our school. If they express too much school spirit, they would look down upon. This is an extremely insincere assumption to make because everyone should take pride in their school and support it 100 percent.
As for me, I take apart in every girl sport there is to be offered and try to make it to all of the games and school activities if possible. You can catch me in the stands yelling extremely loud or even fussing when our team has made an error, so I can guess you can consider me as a school spirited scholar. This is how every student should be, well at least most.

I Want Students
I belong to the classification of people known as students. I am a student and not only am I a student, but as well as a student athlete.
Back in first period I heard one of my teachers complaining about what she expects from her students. As I listened to the roles in which she expects students to serve, I then begin to want to be a teacher also with excellent students as she described. Why do I want students?
I would like to be right at all times and no one can tell me different because it is my classroom. Therefore I want students that will have to listen to my shabby, murky, what I called informative teaching skills and they cant tell me otherwise.
I want students who will be studious and on their best behavior when entering my class. I want students who comes to my class promptly, prepared with their materials and eager to learn.
I want students who has taken care of all their personal necessities in between their five minutes of distributing into their next class and not wait until they have made an entrance into mines to ask to leave out. If so the case may be serious, then students may walk out to handle their situation, but do be in recognition that there may be a written document waiting upon them when they arrive back.
I want students who do what I tell them to do, how I tell them to do it, when it was told to be done. This goes for following directions, when obeying rules, classroom procedures, and how work should be done in my class. There is no time for creativity so they should do it my way or no way at all, Students suggestions shouldn't matter. After all it is my class.
I want students who completes all my work no matter how much is given. Also they should understand that I love to grade papers so they must be willing to complete my work even if given on weekends. They should exclude all of their weekend activities they have had planned in order to get my assignments done.
I want students who keeps up with my pace level of teaching even if I am increasing the rigor of teaching.
I want students who do not bother to ask me questions if they do not know the answer. They should ask their neighbor because I am to worn out from teaching. If their neighbor doesn't know the answer, well that's to bad; They should know the answer anyways.
I want students to be quiet when I am talking. That includes sneezing, coughing and balling up paper. It's a matter of respect and they should respect my speaking by paying attention with no disturbances.
I want students who puts my class first and totally neglect all of their other seven classes.
I want students who may bring me gifts and sat apples on my desk to show their appreciation for my outstanding teaching skills.
And when the day must arrive to say our goodbyes at the end of the school year. I shall surprise my wonderful students by teaching them all over again next year.
When saying this, teachers make it hard for students now a days. I do understand that they are increasing the rigor so that we may have better scores in the ACT and SAT and pass many of the given tests, but somethings may be over the top. Teachers must understand that students do have lives out side of school therefore assigning unnecessary work on weekends is totally not cool. So ease up teachers.

Importance of Fine Arts in School
So I was talking to my friend, Angelica, who had just graduated from Whitehaven; She was informing me about how much she missed high school and all the fine arts that were offered to her. Me, not knowing about all the things they can be proposed concerning this, begin to ask her like what. She told me that she was on a dance team, learned how to tap dance and was in the gospel choir whom performed almost everywhere. Now looking back into Sheffield, I realized that these programs are not offered us. Anger and curiousity are now built up inside of me because we dont have fine arts programs like these. This is very important in every school because it helps students find their talent and hidden ability. Also it defines you and give you more oppotunities of things you can do. U.S. Secretary of Education, Richard W. Riley stated, "I believe arts education in music, theater, dance and the visual arts in one of the most creative ways we have to find the gold that is buried just beneath the surface. They (children) have an enthusiasm for life, a spark of creativity and vivid imaginations that need training. . . training that prepares them to become confident young men and women." I can totally agree with this considering that only extra curricular activities we have are things such as sports, no dance team, step team, tap dancing, theater arts class, art program or choir. Sheffield has nothing to offer to a gifted person in arts and no class to endure their gift so that they can defined themselves. I say all this to say, that this school fail to show the importance of fine art programs. As children, we should have these choices in school to be well rounded and familar with differens types of fine arts. Instead of having us in a mindset that school is all about book work when its more to it. It is education and the term education can be defined as the act or process of imparting or acquiring particular knowledge or skills, as for a profession. So if singing was to be a particular profession for a certain student they wouldnt even get this type of knowledge because some schools doesn't offer any fine arts. So we should speak up and demand fine arts in every school, for it is an important aspect in education.

Mrs. Day A.P. Language
I thought being in an A.P. class would be extremely hard and impossible to do dealing with the type of schedule that I have. I have to manage school, sports, and on top of that i have a job. So some things may not fall into place like they should. Or like my mama would say "Some Gotta Give." But I decided to man up and get into Mrs. Day's A.P. Language class. Walking in her class for my very first time was a mixture of feelings. Nervousness and Excitement was occuring in my system all at the same time. I was excited that I was finally there, but nervous about the work that was going to be given to me. I'm ready for the challenge I thought. Now that I am in here class I think about all the benefits that I am going to get out of this. I will get a college credit for one well thats if I pass the test. Also I think I will be more open with my thoughts. Mrs. Day is teaching us how to argue in a respectful manor and i think it will help me in the long run, as in if i was on a debate team . These are just two ways this class benefits me. Now im just waiting for all the other wonderful beneficial things to come in MRS. DAY'S A.P. LANGUAGE CLASS!.
