Racial Issues

Racial issues are matters that I thought our society overcame a long time ago, but according to the event that happen in Mississippi, I can evidently see that it didn’t. On November 11, 2012 near midnight, Ole Miss police officers came across a large crowd of students "shouting racial slurs and taunting other students with chants" about the recent presidential election.Just minutes after President Obama was re-elected Tuesday, a crowd of 550 "agitated and angry" students and spectators gathered to not only attack his policies, but shout about race."

Now hearing about this situation, I have the opportunity to go to Ole Miss for a summer college program, but should I be scared to do so? My very own mother was frightened for me attend just because of this incident. I don’t know much about politics, but I can say that I was happy that Obama was re-elected. If I was to go down there and say I support Obama, with my black face, will they start a riot with me too? After all, I am a young African American scholar and there was nothing but whites complaining about the re-election of Barack Obama, a “black” president.  I am not afraid to attend the summer college because of this, but it is something that I must keep in mind while I am down there to protect myself from these racial issues.

Teens and Facebook

As I strolled down my timeline to view what is going on in the lives of my fellow friends and family, I saw and read things that I wish I wouldn’t have ever seen before. Saying this, teenagers these days do not know how to use social media sites properly. Sites like Facebook are used to socialize and to keep up with your friends and family, but the way teenagers use Facebook today is unacceptable.

Primarily, teenagers do not use Facebook properly mainly because of the pictures they have upload on it. For example, teen girls will upload pictures of themselves being half naked, breast out, and butt showing or even wearing tremendously tight clothes just to get likes. This shows how young and dumb a teenage girl can be. Don't these girls understand that when they upload a picture to a site like this; any and everybody can view it? This is where maturity stands out. Maybe if they realize that they don’t have to show their goodies to get likes, but simply give a nice smile and pose then it can go a lot further than exposing your body to the world.

Furthermore, teenagers use Facebook for the wrong reasons. I noticed that for some of my teen friends that I have added do not even update their status for whats going on in their life but for negativity such as gang activities. They would constantly represent their gang in their statuses while some may call it "dissing" the others. They also would upload pictures throwing up their gang signs. This an ultimate problem and shows how teens do not use the social media websites ethically and properly.

In all, teens use social media websites such as Facebook incorrectly and are constantly practicing these bad habits every day. Not all teenagers use Facebook wrong but some that I have seen has really gotten to me. Their activities on these sites and inappropiate pitures should be seen and be given parental control over their page. Maybe then their negative statuses and photos may decrease.
