So I was talking to my friend, Angelica, who had just graduated from Whitehaven; She was informing me about how much she missed high school and all the fine arts that were offered to her. Me, not knowing about all the things they can be proposed concerning this, begin to ask her like what. She told me that she was on a dance team, learned how to tap dance and was in the gospel choir whom performed almost everywhere. Now looking back into Sheffield, I realized that these programs are not offered us. Anger and curiousity are now built up inside of me because we dont have fine arts programs like these. This is very important in every school because it helps students find their talent and hidden ability. Also it defines you and give you more oppotunities of things you can do. U.S. Secretary of Education, Richard W. Riley stated, "I believe arts education in music, theater, dance and the visual arts in one of the most creative ways we have to find the gold that is buried just beneath the surface. They (children) have an enthusiasm for life, a spark of creativity and vivid imaginations that need training. . . training that prepares them to become confident young men and women." I can totally agree with this considering that only extra curricular activities we have are things such as sports, no dance team, step team, tap dancing, theater arts class, art program or choir. Sheffield has nothing to offer to a gifted person in arts and no class to endure their gift so that they can defined themselves. I say all this to say, that this school fail to show the importance of fine art programs. As children, we should have these choices in school to be well rounded and familar with differens types of fine arts. Instead of having us in a mindset that school is all about book work when its more to it. It is education and the term education can be defined as the act or process of imparting or acquiring particular knowledge or skills, as for a profession. So if singing was to be a particular profession for a certain student they wouldnt even get this type of knowledge because some schools doesn't offer any fine arts. So we should speak up and demand fine arts in every school, for it is an important aspect in education.

It makes me curious and angry to that we don't have fine arts. I also agree that it can show your hidden talents. We should speak up soon!
ReplyDeleteJasmine- I agree. And I also want to add that this issue is causing people to miss out on some serious money. My husband and I both went to college on full band scholarships where we barely had to pay for anything. I am going to get the singers, actors, writers together and me and Ms. Lumpkins and the band teacher are going to put together some programs like we did last year. Our problem is we don't have the student numbers to afford choir AND band AND theater. The student population drops, those are the first disciplines to go.
